Petit Mal Is Coming To Town…Don’t Miss It!…Enter Our Competition To Win Tickets

Filed under: competition, events, special offers — ashlyn @ 2:56 pm

With Olives love of trapeze there is an almost unquenchable thirst in our house for the dynamic and powerful combination of physical theatre and circus.  With a sense of awe and wonder trips to the theatre have become a family favourite thanks to our friends at Crying Out Loud who are committed to bringing contemporary extraordinary theatre to London from around the world .  The Race Horse Company and their subversive circus performance have emerged from the Finnish underground and are coming to town in June.

In their new show presented by Crying Out Loud, the new show Petit Mal is set against an urban backdrop fusing break dancing, hip hop, trampoline work, a Chinese pole and acrobatics. Petit Mal will be at The South Bank Centre between 4 and 6 June.

For a chance to win 4 tickets worth up to £80 e mail your name and contact details to info@olivelovesalfie.co.uk.

Winners will be notified by 28 May 2010.

For a sneak preview check out their show on You Tube.

It’s A Pop Up Christmas In Stoki

Filed under: Christmas Ideas, Favourite shops, Stoke Newington N16, events — ashlyn @ 6:08 pm

You don’t need to go further than Stoke Newington to do your Christmas shopping this year.  If you haven’t ventured here before now is as good a time as any.  It’s full of independent shops and independent spirit without any of the frantic pace of high streets in and around London.

Rude are back this year, right around the corner from Olive Loves Alfie, with their new pop up shop in conjunction with retro furniture emporium The Cobbled Yard.  Inside their wonderland you will find interior wares and a collection of ‘Rude’ limited edition screen prints, original artwork and Christmas trees.  Open ever Saturday and Sunday in December and 21, 22 and 23 from 12 to 5.

A few of my local favourites are:-

Nanadobbie the 50’s to 70’s retro furniture shop with a great stock of original rock and pop posters.

Pictures and Light where I have found some of my favourite pieces of G Plan furniture.

Hub Women’s Wear that sells some of my favourite contemporary designers Ally Capellino, Comfort Station, Mackintosh and Sonia by Sonia Rykiel.

Hub Men’s Wear stock a fantastic range of contemporary men’s wear from the likes of Folk, Acne, Anthony Peto and Fred Perry.

Shine Holistic for one of many alternative therapies available there or new hair do.

Hop on the number 73 bus from The Angel or drive here with free parking after 1pm on Saturday and all day Sunday.

Kid’s Art

Filed under: events, shop window — ashlyn @ 3:06 pm

I came across some photos yesterday that I thought I should post here.

Earlier this year the shop was taken over by about forty wide eyed 5 year olds who were on a mission to look at colour, print and shapes.  They took photographs with their art teacher and talked about what they could see.

Back at Jubilee Primary School in Stoke Newington they created bold and brilliant pictures in paint and pastels on recycled cardboard squares with corrugated cardboard frames that had been inspired by the work of Howard Hogkin and what they had seen here.

Protest Camp

Filed under: events — ashlyn @ 1:56 pm

A few weeks ago, at Spikes birthday party,  in Hackney’s much loved but often overlooked Springfield Park I ran into Sarah one of my customers.  It is the beginning of festival season and as Spike and his band of merry four year olds dipped in and out of the picnic tent and generally tore around the park Sarah told me about a project that made me smile.  Together with a fellow artist and mummy  they have concieved a really inspirational kids art project  that they are taking to The Big Chill festival.   For two days they are going to run a protest camp encouraging kids to produce art work with rebellious creative thought.  The kids will make banners to shout about their personal big issue whatever it may be.  If you are going to The Big Chill make sure you check it out.  If not watch this space for a report of the action.  I wouldn’t be at all surprised if, inspired by Mischief Makers, protest camps start to appear at school fairs and local festivals next summer.

So along came Dan Zanes with his unmistakable hair and his banjo case.  All the way from Brooklyn to Olive Loves Alfie by way of London’s South Bank to meet the kid’s and parents who love his music.  Dan came to hang out and have some fun.  He signed copies of his albums,  played his banjo, sang a few songs and bought some copies of Anorak the cool kid’s comic we sell here.  Then he wandered off with an Olive Loves Alfie sticker on his banjo case to play another show at South Bank.   The good news is we now have copies of The Welcome Table and Nueva York on sale for £10.

Dan Zanes London Signing

Filed under: boutique, events — ashlyn @ 11:28 am

danzanes2We discovered Dan Zanes last summer when he came to London with his band Dan Zanes and Friends.  Dan used to be a singer for the Del Fuegos in the 80’s and came to kid’s music with an inspired agenda…to create cool rockin’ music for kids and families.  If you are lucky enough to have tickets to see Dan Zanes and Friends perform this easter at Queen Elizabeth’s Hall in London (10-13 April 2009) you are in for a treat.   His last show was great fun and had everyone laughing out loud and rockin’ in the aisles .   If you can’t make it to a show you don’t have to miss out completely because Dan is coming here to Olive Loves Alfie to do a signing on Saturday 11th April 2009 at 11am.

Kid Acne

We have just finished our first design collaboration that was commissioned by the V&A for their Top to Toe exhibition at the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green which runs until the end of April 2009.  It came together brilliantly when our kimono inspired jacket was printed by Aida at Brag Clothing with a repeat print of off set clouds and a boy riding a dragon illustrated by Kid Acne
